Leverage AI and Machine Learning

How Smart Sense Works

Nok Nok Smart Sense leverages AI and machine learning to understand typical user behavior, generating an “anomaly score” that can be utilized through the Nok Nok rules engine. This additional offering enables you to tailor the use of passkeys according to the anomaly score associated with a specific authentication event.

For example, when the anomaly score is low, indicating a low probability that an anomaly exists and that a legitimate user has been authenticated, you can recommend the creation of a passkey via Nok Nok Registration Rules.

And in cases where anomalies are detected, the anomaly score also allows you to set user verification to “required”, while maintaining a default value of “preferred” when no anomalies are present. This capability enhances convenience for users operating their laptops in “clamshell mode,” where accessing the fingerprint sensor may be challenging.

Additionally, based on the anomaly score, you can determine if you want to trigger step-up authentication when a synced passkey is used on a new device for the first time, or when the passkey provider doesn’t provide an “authentication intent” signal (refer to NIST SP 800-63).

Ease of Use and Better Protection

Benefits of Smart Sense

Nok Nok Authentication Cloud and S3 Suite provide phishing resistant authentication through the use of passkeys. This leads to robust protection against bot and account takeover attacks. Smart Sense adds risk signals optimized for passkeys:

  • Ability to trigger passkey creation in low risk situations – reducing the risk when creating passkeys.
  • Simplified support for “clamshell mode” and
  • Ability to reduce the frequency of step-up authentication when unrecognized devices are used, based on the anomaly score.
